Jaguar Head - Barro Negro
Hand crafted ceramic Aztec Jaguar Head. Throughout pre-Columbian cultures from the Olmec, Maya, Mixtec to the Aztecs the Jaguar was perceived as a symbol of power and courage. They were feared and respected animals and many Mayan gods were identified with them. Normally, the jaguar was associated with the night (being a nocturnal hunter), with caverns and the underworld, where there were the souls of the ancestors. The jaguar was also represented in these cultures in their artistic expressions such as paintings, sculptures, pottery, and bas-reliefs on their temples. They are the subject of many myths and are the symbols of water and fertility. This amazing piece can be hung on the wall or placed on a mantel
